Pōkeno Distillery is nestled in a warm, misty, humid valley surrounded by volcanic hills, where it sources pure natural spring water. The distillery is dedicated to using some of the finest barley from three family-owned farms in New Zealand's fertile South Island, contributing to the unique character of Pōkeno Whisky. This quality is further enhanced by a slow fermentation, distillation, and careful maturation process in first-fill casks.
The triple distillation process at Pōkeno is designed to concentrate not only the alcohol content but also to create lighter, more fruity flavors. With only two stills available, the final two distillations are conducted in a 3600-liter spirit still, meticulously separating the hearts from the heads and tails during each run. This slow distillation method allows for significant reflux in the stills, resulting in the collection of a very small "heart" (approximately 20% of the distillation run) for maturation. The additional distillation elevates the whisky's flavor profile to new heights.
Pōkeno Triple Distilled single malt is matured exclusively in the finest first-fill bourbon barrels, producing an incredibly smooth, sweet, and honeyed whisky.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Rich honey and vanilla with hints of citrus and toffee.
- Palate: A delightful mix of rich vanilla bean and butterscotch, complemented by sweet citrus notes and a hint of pepper clove.
- Finish: A long and rich finish, leaving a memorable impression.

TOTARA is the indigenous tree that built Aotearoa (New Zealand). Since the arrival of the Māori, the timber from this tree has been used to construct waka (canoes), homes, carvings, weapons, and containers for food storage. The wood is known for its hard, straight grain and imparts sweet and creamy notes when toasted. Pōkeno boasts New Zealand’s only working cooperage, where the world’s first-ever 200L Totara barrels have been crafted with a light toast and light char for maturing whisky.
After a full maturation in first-fill bourbon casks, this whisky was transferred to Totara barrels for a secondary maturation period, allowing for a unique flavor profile.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Creamy coconut, sweet-scented sap, ripe white peach, and freshly cut wood.
- Palate: Bitter lemon, stone fruit, and hints of dark chocolate.
- Finish: A long and sweet finish, leaving a lasting impression of the Totara influence.
